What is the Freshman Academy?

The Freshman Academy concept was designed to provide students with an environment tailored to aid in the transition students face from middle to high school. The Freshman Academy is essentially a school within a larger school.  As a smaller learning community, teachers can be more personal and responsive to students’ needs. This provides students with better relationships school wide. The Freshman Academy is dedicated to student success by educating them about the core classes, but also study skills, management, punctuality, and integrity.

Our Programs:

The Freshman Academy offers several programs to make a student’s ninth grade year successful. Such programs include:

  • Freshman Orientation: A daylong event held before the start of the school year to welcome students to our campus.
  • Work Ethic Certificate: Students receive this if they earn enough points based on their good work habits.
  • Mentoring: Senior and Junior students mentor freshman students through monthly contacts.
  • ERA program: Reading incentive program where students can earn ERA tickets to purchase items at an auction in May.
  • Rewards: Given by Mrs. Burris throughout the year in classrooms to deserving students to motivate all students to do well in school.
  • Student Advisory Group: Selected students meet with the Freshman Coordinator to improve the quality of student learning at the freshman level.
  • Career Week/Reality Store: Students learn about schools of study, complete their Individualized Learning Plans (ILP), and setting goals for future.
  • Progress Reports: All freshmen should receive progress reports every Friday.
  • Tutoring: Each teacher has their own tutoring after school to assist struggling students. Please contact individual teachers for tutoring times.
